With the holidays upon us, I have been spending time with family and friends and have stalled on working on the site. It is stable for now and it will probably be January 2016 before I get time to work on it again.
Merry Christmas and happy holidays from me to you and yours.
I was able to migrate over the basic text of content from several previous blogs. I now have most of it published again and available. Still on the to-so list:
- Manually bring over some content that did not migrate for some reason. (UPDATE 11/24/2015: COMPLETE! Some still unpublished due to rigorous cleanup.)
- Fix a bunch of images that didn’t migrate over correctly (UPDATE 11/27/2015: 95% COMPLETE! Some photos still missing and posts may be deleted.)
- Correct image file names because I am OCD about such things.
- Updated ALT tags and image metadata, also for OCD reasons. Plus, 508 compliance is nice.
- Fix a bunch of broken BBCODE tags and HTML tags.
- Find and re-upload a bunch of images and media that did not get picked up.
- Go back and proofread all posts for broken links and content that may have moved or no longer be available.
Why Bother? I don’t know that I have a great answer to that question. I really just wanted to brush up on my web CMS and WordPress skills and try to be a little more in-touch with the programming involved, especially data migration.
I also figured that there are still a lot of links and references that point back to many of my old blogs and posts so I might as well leave them up for posterity. Someone may want to reference some of them. I admit that a lot of them are personal topics and there are a lot of outdated announcements from past projects that probably aren’t useful anymore. There are, however, some old posts that actually have some useful content or good references that I occasionally find useful myself so I thought maybe let the interwebs have them back in case someone else finds them useful as well.
Wow, As I start to migrate over content (and fix the metadata that was lost) I am having some good memories while re-reading some of these posts. I know that most people probably will not go read any of that old stuff, but I want it all kept for posterity and reference.
Getting back into this sort of work and going back through old content is really getting me re-motivated. Who knows what the future holds for the dawg.
How many times have I said this? Probably more than you but every time I do, I get so caught up in making the site perfect that I end up never blogging.
That may happen again, but at least I am going to try. Right now, the content migration from my old binrev blog is being a pain in my butt. I got most of it over now I just need to clean it up.
I am also in the process of categorization and organization. After that, the theme is the last thing on the list. Right now, I am learning basic theme and design but I am just so bad at it that I will not focus on this so much. Right now, I grabbed some free theme and tweaked it a little bit. I will eventually customize the graphics and yadda yaddda yadda…
Same claims, same time constraints. Screw it, I am going to try anyway because it is fun!
Next on the to-do list is to migrate content over from my blawg over at binrev. Since Invision is not a true blog CMS, I do not know of an easy way to bring that content over automatically via conversion script. I could write one, but it would probably take me longer to write it than it would to manually bring over the posts.
Plus, I want to keep all of the images and original timestamps intact so I am just going to manually bring them over and try to get everything organized cleanly in the process. You will probably see a lot of content popping up that is backdated to the original time that it was added over on the old sites over the years.
I know that no one cares, but typing this out gets me back into the blogging mindset and gets me some practice that I have been neglecting for a few years.
Wow, I am finding just TONS of old stuff that I have never even seen before digging through some old sites that have been sitting there neglected. Lots of photos, art, articles, and just tons of content that may have never been seen or released.
If I continue to get things cleaned up, maybe I can get them organized one day and figure out some way tot release them. Even if they are not still relevant, they are interesting from a historical perspective.
I also found some juicy gossipy type stuff from some people who were talking shit about me behind my back but who do not realize that things are logged. You would really think that any hacker worth a grain of salt should know better. *shrug*
Removing a bunch of old domains and content form over the years, mostly old projects that are long dead anyway so nothing new and exciting.
What prompted this? Well, look for a relaunch of one long neglected project that *has* been alive but not getting the love that it deserves. An old friend has volunteered to give it a redesign and relaunch.
No one reads this site, so a teaser here will not give anything away… but if it does, just be happy about it and watch for more news soon.
Some of these first posts will be for testing things like customizations and themes.
They are flagged with the category “helloworld” just to keep them controlled. At some point in the future, I will probably go back and delete all of these old hello world posts.
So yeah, just more boring testing.
Yeah, so my wife has been getting me interested in doing stuff again. Real life gets in the way, but lets see what happens.
She has access to the site to learn some webmaster skills, so who knows what she may be posting here. I will post occasionally when the mood strikes, not on any particular topic.
This whole thing will be a work-in-progress/sandbox so stay tuned to see what happens.
